The Peaceful Warrior

Memorable Quotes from Rocky XI

Rocky Jr.: You cast a big shadow.
Rocky Balboa: You ain't gonna believe this, but you used to fit right here. [taps on the inside of his hand]
Rocky Balboa: I'd hold you up to say to your mother, "this kid's gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid's gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew." And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching you, every day was like a privilege. Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life. Don't forget to visit your mother.

Evan Almighty - Watch for the signs God's sending you!

Last night, after a not so filling but tasty supper at the Bellini's, my gf and I went home and watched "Evan Almighty" on DVD. Before when it was showing on the big screen, I thought it's just another cheap reproduction of the same story-line, replaced with a not-as-expensive starring actor, trying to rip off some more of your hard earned money flick. However, despite the most hilarious scenes (which you probably already have seen on commercials anyways), the plot itself is actually quite inspiring! And thus I am writing this post about it~

In case I don't ruin the fun for you to actually go rent the movie and see it yourself, I just wanted to talk about what you already know about the movie - Noah's ark. According to the old story, God was angry with the evil behavior of mankind, thus decided to make a flood which will destroy all things on earth. However, he found one good man, "a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time", to build an ark to save his family and to carry examples of all animals and birds (male & female). The movie itself, was based on such story with new backgrounds of today's society, with a twist of black humor, where the evil was demonstrated in "politics". The main character, Evan Baxter, was then ordered by God to build a boat to escape from the flood which will demolish all evil. What was worth noticing in the film, was the part where Evan's family left him, thinking he was crazy, and then his wife met God in a restaurant, and the last scene where Evan meets God again, and God explains the true meaning of the Ark.

Quotes from the movie:
God: Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?

God: How do we change the world?
Evan Baxter: One single act of random kindness at a time.
God: [spoken while writing A-R-K on ground with a stick] One Act, of, Random, Kindness.

I am trying not to give away too much on the movie, but at the same time sharing what I thought was the most important for everyone to see. Though the nature of the movie is still comedy, but there were still many touching moments and inspiring ideas included in the presentation. Despite whether or not the director intentionally gave the epic story a new interpretation and placed the characters in such social positions, the story reflects somewhat of the truth, and what we observe everyday in reality. With the drastic change in weather conditions, political fluctuations, and economic uncertainties, aren't we all experiencing some kind of flood in life already? And the only hope we have to salvation, is not to complain, but to change our perspectives on our situations. What if the flood is not a revenge from God, but an opportunity responding to our prayers? How do we change "our own" world? One single Act of Random Kindness at a time (ARK).
